Sokoke cat origin and history
The Sokoke cat comes from Kenya , more precisely from the Sokoke-Arabuke rainforest , which is where it gets its name from. This breed of cat appeared on a coconut palm plantation in 1978. In 1984, two kittens were brought to Denmark and then recognized by the FIFe in 1993. Since 2003, it has belonged to the TICA’s “new breed” category.
What does the Sokoke look like?
The Sokoke is a medium-sized cat with long legs and a robust bone structure. This rare and still young breed of cat can live up to 15 years and weigh 6 kilograms. Its hind legs are longer than its front legs so that it can push off easily. The body of the Sokoke is also very muscular . In profile, the skull of the Sokoke looks almost flat. All shades of black tabby are allowed and the eyes are usually amber to light green . The coat is also short and it has hardly any undercoat . Sokoken require a lot of attention and are very playful . Although they are very affectionate , they are not suitable for keeping in an apartment due to their high energy requirements. Sokoken are also very intelligent and curious , which is why you can definitely teach them a trick or two.
Care, Health and Diseases
Sokoke cat is a fairly robust breed of cat, but is somewhat sensitive to cold due to its almost non-existent undercoat . There are no known illnesses that are more common in this breed, probably because it is still a very young breed of cat. Of course, all illnesses that are common in domestic catscan occur. It has a relatively high energy requirement. This is why it also has a good appetite. It is therefore important to make sure that it gets enough exercise so that it does not become overweight. Like all other cat breeds, this breed of cat enjoys a meat-based diet. High-quality wet food with a high meat content or fresh meat in general is suitable. The diet should be adapted to their high energy requirements.
How much exercise does the Sokoke need?
The Sokoke cat definitely needs to be able to run around freely . If this is not possible, you should at least not keep it in a small city apartment, but in a large apartment with a secure balcony or garden. Otherwise, it will not be particularly happy and behavioral problems may arise. This breed sheds very little if you brush them weekly . It is also recommended that you brush them regularly with a grooming glove.
Are there any special features of the Sokoke?
In addition to sufficient space and opportunities to climb and scratch , it is important that they are given enough to do. In most cases, this active cat breed is not suitable for seniors. However, they get along well with children and dogs, probably because of their playful nature. You should always offer them new opportunities to do something, and of course you can also try clicker training with this intelligent cat breed.
